The History of CTH

CTH was founded in September 1994 in Shreveport, LA, in response to the rapid expansion of the Reformed Episcopal Church west of the Mississippi River. The Trustees of CTH wished to continue and extend the longstanding REC tradition of training excellent church leaders from a wide variety of faithful Christian traditions.

In April 2001, the Trustees unanimously voted to move the seminary to Houston, TX, near the headquarters of the Diocese of Mid-America. Many of our current faculty members are the same as those who taught in Shreveport, and the core curriculum and modular system of study also remain.

The Houston location provides the potential for the future growth and development of the program, as well as greater prospects of cooperative partnership with fellow Anglicans of other jurisdictions in a geographical center that boasts a population exceeding four and one-half million people. The city of Houston also affords a large base of parish support, thereby enabling students to obtain practical experience through internship programs.

Though the main campus is in the Houston area, some courses are offered in Dallas (view current schedule).

CTH is governed by a Board of Trustees, chaired by the Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of Mid-America, and operated by the Dean, faculty, and other administrative staff.

CTH has two sister seminaries in the REC—Reformed Episcopal Seminary, Philadelphia, PA, and Cummins Theological Seminary, Summerville, SC—continuing over a century of quality theological education. In addition, CTH maintains a relationship with Andrewes Hall in Phoenix, AZ, and has ties with Central School of Religion in London, England.
